The challenge
Site Administrators needed an easy way to understand and review overall account usage.
As a B2B product, we understand that most businesses need to rationalize their applications portfolio and will therefore need insights into how well their company is leveraging our product.

Currently Site Administrators could access some usage data in tabular format and pull various reports, but there was not a simple way to view, at a high level, overall account usage.

Initial Discovery
Without direct access to site administrators, I had to rely on other sources of research. Reviewing any existing personas, market research, and primarily stakeholder interviews. Fortunately, they were very helpful and able to address most key questions.

What data points does an Admin need to see to understand how their team is leveraging the product?

What do they need to do with this data and how might we support that within the app?

What other data might we surface that we don’t currently?

With so many usage events, how can we simplify?

Representing data graphically is a great way to consume large amounts of information, to quickly see and understand trends, so a dashboard seemed a pretty obvious solution.

Since there are so many individual usage activities, rather than showing all of them in one visual, I worked with stakeholders to categorized them into logical groupings to help reduce some of the noise.

The top section could then provide a high level overview of product usage at the account level. While the bottom section could focus more at the user level.

Listing users in a tabular format with sorting options and a search affordance would make it easy for administrators to quickly check on individual users. Making each row expandable would provide a quick way to view individual usage activities.

While there is plenty of room to make this much more robust and provide deeper drill-downs, this initial release was well received and provided a much easier way for administrators to gain the insights they needed.
